History
A major hub of activity during the Revolutionary War, Richmond was home of Patrick Henry's famous "Give me Liberty or Give me Death"" speech at St. John'sChurch. The city came under attack by the British and was burned in 1781, rebuilt in the following year and grew rapidly thereafter. The city soon became a major industrial center, and during the American Civil War, became the capital of the Confederacy. In 1865, retreating Confederate soldiers again burned the city, and since its recovery it has expanded and grown into a thriving area rich in beauty and history.
