Designed by Thomas Jefferson in 1785, the Virginia State Capitol has been host to a bevy of historical happenings, including the secession of Virginia, and Robert E. Lee's appointment as commander of the Southern army. The capitol is an imposing pillared building, set in the heart of Richmond, near The Museum of the Confederacy and the White House of the Confederacy. Visitors can take free guided tours of the building and surrounding Capitol Square.
